Immigration Effects
When my family moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania from Sicily, Italy, my Great-Great-Grandpa made enough money on the railroad to buy eight houses. One that they bought was a 4 story house on a hillside in a town called Prospect. This town was just above Johnstown. They opened a grocery store on the 1st floor and a pool hall in the basement. During the Great Depression, they gave food, on credit, to anyone in need. Very few, if any, paid them back. Since their house was on a hillside, it saved them from 3 floods that killed over 3,000 people and devastated Johnstown. Today, after re-building, there is a building showing markings of how high the water was. The water in each of the floods was many stories high.
